Press release FITA 16 August 2019
Press release – FITA – for immediate release
We wish to extend our gratitude to everyone, both locally and abroad, who has sent their well wishes to our organisation and our two members who were victims of a senseless and cowardly attack outside our offices on Wednesday 14 August 2019. Thankfully, there were no casualties and the two members are out of danger.
We collectively, as an organisation, take this threat to our security and lives very seriously, and are committed to ensuring that those involved are brought to book and made to account for this evil deed. As and when information has come into our possession, we have forwarded same to the relevant law enforcement agencies tasked with investigating this matter.
We also call upon any members of the public who have any information with regards to the aforementioned incident to come forward and to provide the police with any possible leads which will ensure that those responsible are prosecuted and successfully convicted.
In this regard FITA member Gold Leaf Tobacco Corporation is offering R 10 000 000.00 (ten million rand) to any member of the public who comes forward with tangible information which leads to the conviction of the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
We have previously and on a number of occasions raised the issue of too many instances in the past where there seems to be a reluctance on the part of law enforcement agencies to investigate with vigour incidents in the tobacco industry of a similar nature to what transpired outside our offices on 14 August 2019. Our organisation and its members will continue to follow all leads to ensure that those behind this attack meet the full might of the law. We accordingly call upon all law enforcement agencies to act on these leads to ensure the successful prosecution of all those involved.
Issued by the Fair-trade Independent Tobacco Association: 16 August 2019
